Laneway 73

This morning I had an awesome egg and bacon roll from Laneway 73 in Anglesea. Anglesea is a small beach side town on the great ocean road that is thriving during summer, and much less busy in winter (which is when I visited). However the cafes operate year round and Lnaeway 73 is deifnitely one of the better places to grab a coffee, canoli or, as I did today, an egg and bacon roll. Firstly let me say that there is a lot of shouting that goes on at Laneway 73, but its all good natured and the team are very friendly and looking to make sure you have a good experience. The cafe itself is pretty much what you expect from the surfcoast cafe with lots of eclectic decor mixed in with the odd surfboad and other surf memorabilia. The coffee is excellent (they knew what a Magic was so they clearly know their stuff) and they were very popular on the Saturday morning I was there (mostly takeaways).

The egg and bacon roll itself was excellent with everything you would expect in a great roll. The roll, a squarish panini, was posisbly a little over toasted which is probably my only criticiism - and frankly there will be people that prefer it that way. My only issue with it spending just slightly too long in the sandwhich press was that the crunchy outside ended up breaking up a little and so, whils th einisde of the roll was beautiful and soft, I did end up with a lot of their "special" sauce on my hands once I have finished.

As you can see by the picture, the other elements of the roll were plentiful. The bacon was well-cooked and probably just the right amount. The egg was well-cooked and just a little gooey in the centre - not enough to run over your fingers, but enough that it wasn't hard-boiled. The cheese was expertly melted on top and the tomato sauce was very well made - not spicy but very tasty.

If you are passing through Anglesea then Laneway 73 is worth a look in. Grab a coffee and a roll and it will set you up for the rest of the day. Very high quality baked goods from this cafe that are well worth sampling.
